„Those who are strong can afford to speak softly.» It is a typical sign of communication in this day and age that a lack of conviction goes hand in hand with an excess of staged conspicuousness. What is not strong enough in terms of insight or imagination presents itself louder, shrill, bigger and more provocative.
Softer than loud – that sounds as if one could increase an effect by reducing its means. And you can! Soft tones can be surprisingly powerful and strangely sublime amid the din of wild cries.
In this sense, the works of Ainara Torrano and Tina Wohlfarth assert themselves clearly, unchallenged and confidently in the contemporary art market with its superlatives and excesses. The artists operate with a strikingly quiet modesty. Both artists are primarily showing new works that need no passionate justification. They are large, magnificent, and can afford to be quiet, quiet to the point of the unspoken and calm in minimal gestures to the effect of a well-placed silence that defends inner peace against external noise; works that are quieter than loud.

Kämpfen wie ein Stier – Ainara Torrano

Traditionellerweise ruft der Künstlerbund Dresden im November den Tag der offenen Ateliers aus. 2021 erstreckt sich dieser bis zum Jahresende und kann mit beteiligten Künstler*innen individuell vereinbart werden. Ein Besuch bei Malerin Ainara Torrano.
Wenn man so will, hat Ainara Torrano ihre künstlerische Erweckung einer Krise zu verdanken – der wirtschaftlichen in Spanien 2008. Sie arbeitete damals seit zehn Jahren als Kunstlehrerin. Ein unsteter Job, denn sie besetzte Stellen immer nur für einen befristeten Zeitraum. Immer wieder musste sie neu suchen, sich neu einarbeiten. Die Malerei, sagt sie, hatte sie damals völlig vergessen: „Ich hatte nicht die Kapazität, mich in zwei Welten zu bewegen.“

Mit der Wirtschaftskrise, erzählt die Malerin, gerieten Unterrichtsfächer wie Philosophie, Musik und Kunst ins Hintertreffen. Prominent blieben Naturwissenschaften, Schöngeistiges galt als verzichtbarer. Ainara fiel es zusehends schwer, eine Beschäftigung zu finden. Ein Bezug zu Deutschland war nach ihrem Erasmus-Aufenthalt immer geblieben, das Interesse an der Sprache nicht verblasst. Ainara kam zu Besuch nach Dresden und wohnte bei einer befreundeten Architektin. Sie wollte den Sommer hier verbringen, ihre Deutschkenntnisse auffrischen – und nach einigen Wochen stellte sich die Frage: „Warum bleibe ich nicht hier?“
